Museum Purchase

On this vase, Elizabeth Villere abstracted violets into three basic elements—leaves, stems, and blossoms—and repeated them as a decorative frieze that complements the cylindrical form of the vase. Newcomb Pottery, where Villere worked, encouraged decorators to adapt natural forms in this way rather than imitate them directly. Decorators like Villere were trained in this method of decoration at Newcomb College, a women’s college that spawned the pottery. The company also focused on flowers and other plant motifs native to the South as a reflection of its New Orleans location. Within these parameters, decorators created designs based on whichever Southern plants most appealed to them. Emphasizing abstracted Southern motifs allowed Newcomb Pottery to distinguish itself from other art potteries of the time, such as Rookwood Pottery. (Allure of Flowers)
