Museum Purchase: Daisy Wade Bridges Fund from the Collection of Pat H. Johnston

Born in Wisconsin, Oscar Bachelder left home at seventeen to travel across the country as an itinerant potter. He finally settled in the small mountain town of Luther, near Asheville in 1911. He bought some land with clay deposits and started Omar Khayyam Pottery. Bachelder was one of the first North Carolina potters to make the transition from utilitarian to art wares. Many of his wares have deceptively simple shapes and subtle shadings of colors. One of his most striking glazes was a deep black Albany slip, as seen on this pitcher.
