This footed tray and the plate nearby were made in Nevers in central France. The city’s tin-glazed earthenware tradition began in the late 16th century when newly arrived Italian craftsmen began utilizing the technique they had learned in their homeland. Nevers remained an important center of faience production until the early 1700s, when the quality of its wares began to decline. The tray’s shape is based on a contemporary French silver design, while its painted scene with figures in a landscape recalls the narrative decoration (istoriato) popular on 16th-century Italian tin-glazed earthenware (maiolica).
