Gift of Gretchen and Nelson Grice

Virgil Ortiz grew up on the Cochiti Pueblo, a community located on the Rio Grande River, midway between Albuquerque and Santa Fe, New Mexico. Well known for its tradition of figurative ceramics and story tellers, his mother and grandmother were both celebrated makers. At the age of six Ortiz began to work in clay. Today the artist has received widespread acclaim for his edgy ceramics and his expanded artistic endeavors to include fashion, accessories, home furnishings and work in film. However, for Ortiz, everything revolves around his pottery. He says “It’s a big circle, all the different mediums that I work with….But it’s a big circle that has one heartbeat, which is clay.” Typically Ortiz’s ceramic work utilizes the traditional techniques and decorative language of the Cochiti to comment on contemporary society and current events.
