Museum Purchase with funds from the Charles W. Beam Accessions Endowment in honor of José Fumero

Vicente Hernández is an acclaimed Cuban artist who describes himself as a magical surrealist. His fantastic scenes are filled with otherworldly flying vehicles and detached, sprawling cityscapes. With a combination of humor and irony, Hernández’s paintings depict strangers in a strange land and explore issues related to cultural identity and immigration. In The Fly, a zeppelin-like contraption carries a coastal Cuban town across the ocean, presumably to a new world. Hernández produced this painting while in-residence at the McColl Center in 2015. The museum acquired this painting in honor of longtime patron José Fumero, who passed away unexpectedly in 2016. Fumero was of Cuban descent and had a great appreciation for Hernández’s work.
