Reflection to Little Miss Cole
2010
Sam Gilliam

mixed media mixed media

Currently on view at Mint Museum--UPTOWN

Gift of Patrick Diamond

In this recent work, Gilliam has combined scraps of paper painted with vibrant colors and patterns in a more traditional collage–like approach, combining them an additional layer of mirrored elements. The smooth surfaces of the mirrors contrast with the different textures of the painted paper. They also reflect both the painted surfaces and the viewer, depending on the angle at which the work is seen. The title refers to the daughter of the artist Kevin Cole, whom Gilliam has mentored for many years. It was included in the exhibition Protégé at the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African–American Arts + Culture in 2010–11, which explored the relationship between the two artists’ work.
