Back Porch Serenade features a recurrent theme in Bearden’s art: music, and, in particular, a trio of musicians. Here, blocks of green and black paper give the porch a sense of structure. Snippets of patterned paper create the men’s shirts. With simple means, Bearden has created a complex space that hovers between depth (the porch upon which the musicians sit) and flatness, as there is no sense of traditional perspective.
