In this print version of the collage The Train, Bearden continues to play with the reversal of the original’s light and dark tones. Here, however, yellows and oranges replace the darker shades, and greens replace the lighter ones. The result, largely absent of black and white to help outline the work’s primary forms, is almost abstract: a glowing image of vibrant colors. Even the namesake train is difficult to decipher, rendered virtually invisible by the extreme intensity of the green and orange hues.
