Memories (12 Trains)
1974
Romare H. Bearden

aquatint aquatint etching {process}

Not currently on view

Gift of Jerald Melberg in honor of Phil Kline

In Memories (12 Trains), Bearden has taken the original composition of the collage The Train, reversed the darks and lights, and reduced the palette to tones of red, white, and blue. One effect of this treatment is the many of the forms – from the wooden walls of the house to the features of the figures’ faces and the light seen through the windows (and delineating the train) are all rendered in brilliant white lines. This manipulation has rendered the scene somewhat abstract (as compared to the original collage) but still fairly legible.
