Gift of the Heather and Tony Podesta Collection

Tom Hunter compiled this series of photographs over a two-year period while living and traveling in a double-decker bus. He was en route to the Czech Republic from Portugal, documenting the lives of young people who were part of the underground techno music scene. His subjects were moving from festival to festival in makeshift mobile homes made from recycled lorries, boats, buses, and coaches. The press had presented this alternative mobile culture in a negative light, which was only perpetuated by local governments who regarded these transients as social outcasts. Hunter sought to use his colorful and authentic portraits to reverse these negative misperceptions. In 1996, he was awarded the Photography Prize by Fuji Film for this series.
