The Mourners, My Last Family Photo
1996
Anneè Olofsson

color photograph

Currently on view at Mint Museum--UPTOWN

Gift of the Heather and Tony Podesta Collection

Anneè Olofsson took this impulsive portrait taken with her parents and grandparents in their summer garden early in her career. In a 2015 interview with Yale Radio, Olofsson explained how this photograph has evolved in her mind, since she and her mother are the only ones from the photo still living. She now regards this less as a family photograph and more as a document to her being “the last of the line,” given she has no siblings and no children. Despite her original intent to create an absurd family portrait, Olofsson now realizes she produced an artwork that in hindsight is part vanitas, part memento mori; it has become a reminder of her own mortality.
