Chaos and Order
2008
Tom Nakashima

oil paint gilding (material)

Not currently on view

Gift of the Artist and Hodges Taylor Gallery

Tom Nakashima creates his enticing, thought-provoking images through a process of revealing and concealing. First, he affixes a layer of found images to the board, then applies layers of paint, which he scrapes and scores to reveal the image below. Here, he has even added a layer of golden paint to the composition, which shimmers softly as the viewer’s eye passes over the composition. Chaos and Order also contains many strips of newspaper fragments, which run across the top of each log, reminding viewers of the source of the material from which the paper itself is made. In this monumental painting, Nakashima heralds the dead blackbird, which is entombed beneath a pile of precariously balanced logs. Chaos and Order conjures associations of consumption and conservation, death and life, and entropy and harmony.
