Six Prisons
2004
Peter Halley

acrylic Roll-a-Tex

Not currently on view

Gift of Ginger Kemp in honor of Mark Richard Leach

Peter Halley’s Six Prisons directly references prison cells and other spaces of incarceration. The harsh geometry and synthetic colors and texture also suggest the manmade world that is divorced from anything natural. Halley utilizes geometry as shorthand for sociological and historical conditions of the times, such as urban alienation, polarization of nations, war prisons, and corporate crime leading to imprisonment. Halley’s work is also a commentary on modern abstract painting, offering a subtle critique of abstraction’s often lofty ideals. He implies that abstraction does not necessarily signify transcendence but can be a schematic for the culture and commerce of industrialized societies.
