Museum Purchase: Auxiliary Costume Fund

The original owner of this formal frock coat was the American James Lamson who wore this garment to a court ball in Paris in the 1820s. He reportedly paired it with a pair of black satin breeches with small satin buttons and silk ribbons at the knees. The cut of the coat is often referred to as a bob-tail as the coat tails are cut straight across thus eliminating the pointed ends. This style is credited as an American fashion innovation.
