Museum Purchase: Delhom Service League Fund
This pitcher, with its walrus spout and polar bear handle, depicts on one side the mythological King Gambrinus, who gave us the secret of making ale, handing a mug of the frothy drink to Brother Jonathan. On the other side is a scene from a Bret Harte poem of 1870 depicting discrimination against Chinese immigrants. The subjects may refer to the exploration of the Pacific Northwest. Designed as an ale jug, this elegant piece would never have been actually used in a tavern.
