This wedding gown belonged to Alice Faye Otis, the daughter of prominent Bostonians. In 1884 she wed Dr. Walter Otis, a wealthy Boston psychiatrist. Although the exact date of their wedding is not known, the heavy fabric of the gown suggests a fall or winter ceremony. Known to dress in expensive garments, Mrs. Otis must have made quite an impression walking down the aisle in this sumptuous gown - a couture creation from L. P. Hollander & Company of Boston, Newport and Paris. Featuring the classic bustle silhouette of the Gilded Age, the dress boasts a 100-1/2 inch train lined underneath with row after row of French lace that would not even be seen unless the train was lifted to reveal this extravagance.
