Cedric Smith selects vintage photographs, recalling the cultural history of African-Americans, and inserts them into new contexts in his vividly colored paintings. By doing so, Smith calls attention to the historical lack of representation of people of color in such publicity. In Kentucky Winner Cigar, Smith has used a photograph of Alonzo "Lonnie" Clayton, a famous jockey in the 1890's. At the age of 15, Clayton became the youngest Kentucky Derby winner when he rallied his mount Azra from six lengths behind to win the coveted race. Clayton rode in four Derbies receiving a first, two seconds and a third place between the years 1892-1897.
