Gift of Cristobal Zañartu and Itaka Schlubach

Sheila Hicks explores the inherent qualities of fiber in her works, celebrating its natural propensities and the manner in which color interacts with form. Hicks studied under Josef and Anni Albers, the pioneers of color theory and fiber art respectively. Naturally color theory, the manner in which colors interact with one another and contribute to overall understanding of form, is one of Hick's main sources of inspiration and innovation. 'Soft Stones' also investigates the practice of wrapping and its connotations of protection, inclusion, secrecy, strength and meditation.
