Drum Chorus reveals just how wide a range Bearden had when it came to depicting the power of music. While a work like Evening Guitar, hanging nearby and completed just a year earlier, suggests a hushed, calm environment, Drum Chorus is bursting with energy. Here, Bearden used jagged, brightly colored strips of paper in the background, painted lines representing sound bursting forth, and angular figures in active poses to suggest the energy and action of the scene, where the drummer (on the right hand side of the composition) takes over and leads the song.
