Evening of the Gray Cat
1982
Romare H. Bearden

collage collage board

Currently on view at Storage: Offsite

Gift of Bank of America

Cats feature prominently in much of Bearden’s work and serve as poignant symbols containing a myriad of meanings. Protectors and guardians, these mysterious creatures’ lean, agile bodies allow them to silently traverse borders. In "Evening of the Gray Cat" the challenge of locating the gray cat that is the subject of this work forces the viewers’ eyes to travel throughout the interior of this home, learning more about its inhabitants in the process. As one takes in the interior space, Bearden’s masterful use of collage reveals itself. Some objects, such as the base of the gas lamp on the left and the brush on the right, are cut – already printed with the images of what they represent – from other sources. Other elements, including the cat, the dog, and the watermelon, are cut into the shapes of their subjects and then further detailed by the artist. Bearden has also used patterned paper throughout the composition, from the room’s flooring and the cloth on the table on the left to the scarf worn by the central figure.
