Thomas Turner (1729–1793) gained fame as an English diarist who recorded everyday life for over eleven years in the village of Sussex. His massive diary provided a fascinating glimpse of life in preindustrial England. Abbott enjoyed a brief career as a portrait painter, most often of male subjects, and exhibited at the Royal Academy. Bouts of depression lead to his being declared insane around age forty.
