De la Renta studied painting in Spain at age 18. Soon thereafter, he worked as a fashion illustrator and then assistant to the great couturier Cristóbal Balenciaga. De la Renta later worked at the House of Lanvin in Paris. By the late 1950s, he was in New York City working for Elizabeth Arden and opened his own fashion house in 1965. Today, his firm produces opulent evening and read-to-wear fashions, a fragrance line and other luxury items.
