The Phebe Warner Quilt in the Bresler Collection is an early 20th century copy of a famous quilt owned by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The original quilt was made in 1803 by Sarah Warner Williams of New York City for her cousin Phebe Warner in 1803. Using a center medallion style and broderie perse appliqué, the quilt illustrates the high standards of quiltmaking of the early 19th century. The unknown maker of this quilt may have seen the original Phebe Warner Quilt either on exhibit at the Metropolitan or may have seen Margaret Concha's watercolor rendering of the quilt. During the 1930s, the watercolor and other paintings were exhibited widely to encourage support for Works Progress Administration projects, and may have provided the quiltmaker another opportunity to sketch the quilt.
