Gift of the Artist in honor of Chris Rifkin

Lotus Necklace #3 is one of two necklaces by Linda MacNeil in Tthe Mint Museum’s collection that depict lotus flowers in a style reminiscent of ancient Egyptian art. The other, Nile Midnight, is on view in the Craft + Design permanent collection gallery of jewelry. On both necklaces, the lotus emerges from a V-shaped plant and is abstracted into geometric elements. MacNeil says of these two works, “The lotus is such an exotic plant. I am attracted to the contrast of its powerful color, with a flower like a gem on display above the brilliant green lily pad.” She was inspired to create her own version of the lotus after seeing it represented in Egyptian art. MacNeil has been making jewelry with glass elements since the late 1970s. She made Lotus Necklace #3 at the Waterford Crystal factory in Ireland, following a residency there held by her husband, glass artist Dan Dailey. (Allure of Flowers)
