Classic floral appliqué quilts of the 1850s and 1860s differ slightly from region to region and among different ethnic communities. The arrangement of this Birds and Butterflies Quilt reflects the coverlet designs from southeastern Pennsylvania, which were woven on a jacquard loom by itinerant male weavers. The pair of birds depicted in this quilt was also a common element used on Pennsylvania German painted furniture.
