The Harry and Mary Dalton Collection

Winslow Homer spent his early years creating wood engraving illustrations for Harper's Weekly. In 1873 he began to use watercolor. At that time, watercolor was considered a woman's medium and not appropriate for a serious artist. He persevered in his use of watercolor throughout his life. His determination and tenacity brought both his work and this medium to distinction. During 1885 Homer spent five weeks in Santiago de Cuba, the second oldest town in Cuba. His watercolors and small number of drawings, focused on the street scenes of this bustling port, its Spanish-Moorish architecture rich with ornamental ironwork, and the surrounding Sierra Maestro mountains.
