The name Poet's Pitcher was prompted by the decorative medallions depicting the heads of six poets: Homer, Virgil, Ossian, Dante, Shakespeare, and Milton. The designer, Karl Müller, favored subjects relating to literature and designed several other pieces using literary themes, among them busts of Shakespeare and Edwin Forrest, a famous actor. The shape of this pitcher was derived from a Renaissance metal form, with its paneled sides and acanthus leaf decoration. The acanthus leaves which decorate the handle are repeated in the gilded motif on the inner lip, an unusual feature in this pitcher. Historicism was rampant during this period and this pitcher is a perfect example of this interest in the past, although authenticity was not of primary importance.
