Museum Purchase: Auxiliary Costume Fund
Jacques Doucet rivaled Charles Frederick Worth as one of the top international couturiers of the late 19th century. In the early 1870s Doucet established his maison de couture (couture fashion house); fame soon followed. Rich clients from around the world eagerly flocked to Paris to shop for one-of-a-kind fashions. This gown comprises a separate bodice and skirt and is a marvel of complex construction. The bodice alone, is composed of 48 separate pattern pieces; with a comparable number comprising the inner lining elements. Multiple pattern pieces also create the chevron design of the skirt.
