Gift of Roy Arnold
Each of these canvases offers a distinctive view of New York City. Max Kuehne’s painting depicts the lower tip of Manhattan as seen from the dockyards of Brooklyn while Hayley Lever (in a canvas completed during his first year in New York) offers a unique worm’s eye view up a steep cliff, which is surmounted by an industrial building, near the George Washington Bridge on the northern part of the island. While neither of these artists is considered an official part of Henri’s inner circle, both were close associates of its members and both were clearly influenced by Henri’s advice to his students to seek their subject matter in the everyday life of their urban surroundings.
