Museum Purchase.

Although they differ in title and do no bear an exact 1:1 compositional relationship, Romare Bearden’s collage Of the Blues: Carolina Shout and print Baptism share many features beyond the theme of a figure being baptized. These include the forms of the central group of figures at the heart of the scene where the baptism is taking place. Yet, perhaps surprisingly, there is a greater degree of abstraction in the collage than the print (as opposed to The Train and its related prints, seen nearby), for in Baptism, more features of the faces of the surrounding figures are visible and the foliage on the upper right is more defined, as is the water in the foreground and elements of the landscape in the background.
