In the 1890s, fashionable silhouettes consisted of a tight bodice with “leg o’mutton” sleeves created by small puffs or ruffles of fabric capping the sleeves to extremes. Skirts were gathered at the waist and fell softly over the hips creating an A-line silhouette that was almost bell-shaped. Tight, elongated corsets defined this slight S-shaped silhouette that remained popular until the 20th century.
