Gift of Dr. Maurice Golbey
Rauschenberg’s "Surface Series" is one of four groups of screenprints that comprise his larger "Currents" series. Each print is a unique composition of headlines, texts, and photographs taken from the "New York Times, Los Angeles Times," and other major U.S. newspapers. The thirty-six original collages assembled by Rauschenberg as the original source for the editioned prints were eventually reproduced in a monumental fifty-four foot long print also entitled "Currents." The Mint Museum’s permanent collection includes seventeen screenprints from the "Surface Series."
