Saint Peter
circa 1490-1496
Cosimo Rosselli

oil paint wood panel

Currently on view at

Museum Purchase: Charles Stone Endowment Fund

Saint Peter was one of the 12 disciplines of Christ and the first pope of the Catholic Church. He is traditionally seen holding a key or set of keys, a symbolic reference to the "keys to the kingdom of heaven" and the pope's authority over all things Catholic. Rosselli was one of several artists selected in the 15th century to paint the interior of the Sistine Chapel in Rome. Others included Sandro Botticelli, Pietro Perugino, Domenico Ghirlandaio followed by the great Michelangelo (his ceiling paintings date to 1508-1512). This painting was apparently part of an unidentified altarpiece that comprised several panels.
