Jiri Kolar

Gift of Diane L. Ackerman.

Artist and writer Jiri Kolar was a controversial figure in the Czechoslovakian avant-garde during the middle years of the twentieth century. Some of his work was banned by authorities in the 1930s and 1960s and he was even jailed briefly after police found an anti-Communist manuscript that he had written. His collages, in which images are often disrupted by being cut up into strips and recombined with other images, have been interpreted to reflect the fragmentation, distortion, and destruction that he experienced during his turbulent life. Using a scalpel to cut images out of magazines, Kolar invented several techniques for re-composing these images, including rollage, in which strips of two images are alternated with each other, making it difficult for the viewer to focus on one or the other.
