Maria A’Becket grew up in New England and received some of her early artistic training from William Morris Hunt. Hunt was a popular teacher as well as one of the earliest proponents of the techniques of the French painters working in the Barbizon region of France, some of whom he had befriended during an extended stay in Europe in middle of the nineteenth century. It was likely through introductions made by Hunt that A’Becket was able to paint alongside the Barbizon painter Charles Francois Daubigny during a trip to the Pont-Aven region. Prior to his time in France, Hunt was one of the first American artists to travel to Italy for inspiration and training. He likely painted "Italian Boy" during one of these trips.
