Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Sol Orlinsky

Early in his career, Eastern European artist Ivan Tavakovic created satirical paintings that critiqued the human condition. During the latter part of his life, he experimented in a wide range of mediums, including collages like these that combine visual elements from different sources, reconfiguring them in an almost Surrealist fashion to create new and often disturbing hybrid forms and scenes. These two collages were included in an exhibition of Tabakovic’s work in New York in 1966 titled “Life, Thoughts, Dreams.” In the catalogue accompanying show, his work is described as a “supplementary universe to the traditional one” and as “illustrating the ambiguity of life, the singularity of events and the affinity of art and science because his combinations of objects suggest that there is a definite correlation between the elements of the physical and material world and those of the emotional and mental world.”
