This stand, coated in a wash of cobalt oxide and decorated in gilt, is an example of the style described by William Littler in a 1766 advertisement as “Mazzarine blue and gold.” The stand would have held sweet delicacies, such as small cakes, pastries, and nuts or fruits preserved in sugar.
