Gift of Mr. Frank Ryan Harty

The Mint Museum's portraits of Queen Charlotte and King George III in their coronation robes are versions of Allan Ramsay’s original State Portraits housed in Buckingham Palace. Numerous copies of the original portraits were shipped throughout Europe and the American colonies, where they helped establish and maintain political and social power for the British monarchs. When George III ascended to the throne in 1761, Ramsay was given the title “one of His Majesty’s Principal Painters in Ordinary,” and he assumed the duties of the King’s painter.
