Museum Purchase: Delhom Collection
This mug’s lower section is double-walled, its outer layer is cut through with a knife to create a decorative pattern. Such vessels were a specialty of Nottingham potter James Morley, who was one of thirteen potters sued by John Dwight between 1693 and 1698 for infringing on his patent to make “fine stone” mugs. Morley apparently ignored the injunctions.
