Each of these six plates contains a verse and is numbered to facilitate the reading of the verses in order: 1 What is a / merry man 2 Let him do / what he can 3 To enter / tain his Guests 4 With wine / and merry Jests 5 But if his / wife do frown 6 All merry / ment goes down The Merryman rhyme was a popular textual theme on delftware plates from the 1680s to the 1750s. The Mint’s set, dated 1693, is one of the earlier complete sets.
