Little is known of van Cuelen's early life, although his mature style was fully developed by 1627 and he gained renown as a portrait painter working in the English courts of King James I, Queen Anne, and King Charles I. After 1632, van Cuelen's portraits took on more of the mannered gestures and flowing drapery lines now identified with his compositions. By 1647 he was residing and painting portraits in Amsterdam.
