This engraving is from a series entitled The Life of the Virgin that Goltzius engraved in 1593-1594. Each image was intentionally rendered in the style of a different artist; this particular work is in imitation of the great German artist Albrecht Dürer. Goltzius' mastery of the engraving technique is seen in his fine tonal qualities achieved by alteration of the thick and thin lines. His abilities as an engraver are perhaps even more remarkable as his right hand was crippled early in his life.
