Although best known today for his groundbreaking work in stained glass, John La Farge was also a talented and innovative painter. After training briefly in Paris with Thomas Couture, La Farge returned to America to study with William Morris Hunt, who was among the first Americans to embrace and promote the new techniques being developed by the Barbizon School and the Impressionists in France. "In the Glen" was one of the first paintings that La Farge completed after his return to the United States in 1858. In this small but beautiful composition, one can see that La Farge was beginning to apply what he was learning from Hunt about working directly and spontaneously from the local landscape and that, like his peers in Europe, he was exploring new ways to capture the effects of light and atmosphere in his work.
