Gift of Mary Myers Dwelle

The story of Christ and the Samaritan Woman was frequently the subject of paintings in the 16th and 17th centuries. Based on the Book of John, chapter 4, verses 4-42, it relates the visit of Christ to the city of Sychar in Samaria and his conversation with a woman at the well of Jacob. Here, the artist relates the moment when the woman states that she knows of the coming of the Messiah and Christ responds, "I who speak to you am He."
