Gift of Mr. Samuel H. Kress
Ridolfi's paintings reflect an awareness of his contemporaries Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael. Although Raphael invited Ridolfi to join him in commissions for the Vatican in Rome, the artist remained in Florence where he prospered with numerous portrait and altarpiece commissions. This tondo (round painting) is from Ridolfi's best period and presents a lyrical image of the Madonna holding the Christ Child who leans forward towards Saint John the Baptist as Saint Dominic kneels in prayer. Saint Jerome kneels to the Madonna's left with his cardinal's hat on the ground beside him. The remaining figure is believed to be Saint Nicholas.
